Peterborough is a cathedral city located in the East of England, within Cambridgeshire county. It has a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times and has played significant roles throughout English history, particularly during the Middle Ages.
History
The earliest known human settlement in the area was a Romano-British fort established on Nene Hill around 300 AD. However, it is believed that there were earlier inhabitants of Celtic origin who occupied the site before the Romans arrived. After the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the early 5th century, the region was repeatedly raided by invading barbarian tribes.
Following the Peterborough casino Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Peterborough became a crucial location for royal visits and military campaigns due to its strategic position near the River Nene and on major trade routes. The city’s prominence grew with the construction of Ely Cathedral in the nearby town, which had been built by Benedictine monks. This was followed by the establishment of a collegiate church dedicated to Sts Peter and Paul.
During the Middle Ages, Peterborough Abbey became an important monastic center under Abbot Augerus (1146-1173), who introduced reforms aimed at purifying the clergy’s way of life and increasing devotion among laypeople. The abbey flourished until its dissolution in 1539 by Henry VIII as part of his English Reformation.
Today, Peterborough Cathedral stands on a site where successive cathedrals were built from the Roman times up to its present form in Gothic Revival style completed in 1897.
Culture
Peterborough has been known for producing significant contributions to culture. In addition to being an important center of art and architecture during medieval times, it was also the birthplace of several notable writers such as Sir Henry Fanshawe (1544) and Robert Smith (1661-1720), both prominent mathematicians.

Since its early history as an important hub on the Roman trade route between the Danes (in what is now Denmark) and other European regions, Peterborough’s economic prosperity grew with time due in part to being strategically located near key trading routes connecting England’s northern counties to Europe. In modern times, however, industrial decline led the local authority to pursue urban regeneration plans for revitalizing neglected areas.
